Shereen La Rae Way grew up in the small town of Addison in upstate New York. She began her musical studies with piano lessons throughout elementary school. In high school she added flute, percussion, and voice to her instrumental repertoire. During her junior year in high school, she moved to the NYC suburb of Nyack in Rockland County. She studied music education at Nyack College, and it is here where she received her very first voice lessons from the wonderful Marion Howe. She graduated in 1999 with a BM Ed majoring in voice and minoring in flute. She received a position teaching music at Haverstraw Middle School a few weeks after she graduated, and she held that position for a year and a half. In 2001 she took a new position as a choral director and voice teacher for Pearl River High School, which she still holds.
Shereen was an avid vocal performer at her Alma Mater. She enjoyed it so much that she put together three recitals in her junior and senior years of college and sang in a number of recitals for friends. She toured Europe with the Nyack Chorale as a soloist and assisted with conducting as well.
Shereen continues to do song recitals whenever she can find a venue. She has also taken a keen interest in opera performance. She began singing in Juilliard’s Evening Division with the Choral Union in 2000. This afforded her a wide range of performance experiences from popular to opera and everything in between in some of New York’s biggest halls. In 2003 she directed her attention to opera and auditioned for Juilliard’s Opera Workshop. She was thrilled to be accepted and to study with Maestro Vincent La Selva. She is currently performing with the Hudson Lyric Opera.
